On July 15th, 2024 the so-called “Safer Kentucky Act” went into effect making it illegal for homeless people to camp in public spaces across the state. The law also targets tenants – any tenant that causes more than $500 of property damage to their rental until in Kentucky can be charged with a felony. There’s already a shelter and eviction crisis in Kentucky and the “Safer Kentucky Act” has just made it that much worse.
Local tenants are fighting back
Punch Up is working with local groups in Kentucky that are fighting back against the harsh new law and unleashing tenant power to stop the housing and shelter crisis. Right now, Madison County does not have a permanent, year-round emergency shelter for those of us without a place to stay indoors.
Punch Up supporters across the country have made phone calls, raised money, created media, and traveled to Kentucky to help with on the ground outreach.
